Carbon footprint
The carbon footprint of products and services tells us the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions caused by production and consumption. Therefore the smaller the carbon footprint is, the less impact the product or service has on climate change and global warming. The carbon footprint of energy production is generally measured in carbon dioxide emissions per produced energy unit, or per gram of CO2 per kilowatt-hour of electricity and heat.
- Scope 1 (Umfang 1) - direct emissions: Vehicle emissions, low-temperature utilities.
- Scope 2 (Umfang 2) - indirect emissions: Heat and electricity consumption and energy loss in distribution system.
- Scope 3 (Umfang 3) - indirect emissions: Waste, emissions from contractors in construction projects, staff’s air travel, staff’s commuting to and from work.
Calculate your carbon footprint
Reykjavik Energy customers can calculate their carbon footprint from their consumption of heat and electricity purchased from Veitur Utilities and ON Power. The table below shows the calculation quotients that apply to Reykjavik Energy customers who want to estimate their carbon footprint in scope 2.
Calculation quotients for customers in scope 2 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | Units |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
For the purchase of hot water | 214,23 | 179,49 | 162,12 | 162,12 | gCO2-equivalents/m3 |
For the purchase of electricity | 9,80 | 8,30 | 7,50 | 7,40 | gCO2-equivalents/kWh |
