You pay for the usage of the person who takes over the house until you (or he/she) makes you realise that you are still paying. It sometimes happens that people only realise weeks or months later.
-
The balance will not be correct for the specific period, since the reading of metres for hot water and electricity is a prerequisite for the balance settlement.
-
You will need to negotiate with the person who takes over on how much each party will pay.
-
The person who moves in and the person who moves out must calculate their bills between themselves. Veitur Utilities’ staff can assist but the calculation will never be perfect.
-
Our bill states which unit is being paid for.
-
There is no way Veitur Utilities’ staff can know a new user has taken over before it receives notification that this has taken place.
The general rule is that the user who is registered for a meter is responsible for notifying a new user. Property owners are responsible for ensuring that the right person is registered for the energy bill. Should the property owner or his representative realize that a change in user has happened without notification, the property owner must report it. If the property owner neglects to notify this, unpaid bills from that property becomes his responsibility.
Here you can fill out and send us a notification of a new user (in Icelandic)
Also, you can notify us by telephone at 516-6000 or by visiting us at our next office. Note that if you want our employee to read a meter/meters we collect a reading charge. If you read a meter and register the reading on the web, a reading charge will not be collected.
Other facilities that is good to contact when moving home.
- Contact the Registers Iceland for a change of legal domicile.
- Contact your phone company to transfer internet connection, home phone and the like.
- Contact the post office to get your mail sent to a new address.
When notifying a new user, you need to have a social security number of the person who is moving out and the social security number of the person moving in, namely the social security numbers of those who were registered for the meter and the person who is to be registered for the meter.
Also, have a reading of the meters available or request that we come and read the meters for a charge.
Tenants have the right to be registered for the energy bill if they request so. If the energy bill is registered on the landlord, he or she is responsible for payment of bills for the energy use of the tenant. Please note that the person registered for the energy bill may request to suspend the supply of energy without late payments being the reason.
It is not necessary to report a change of owners of water and sewage charges since the bills are issued on the owners as they are registered in the Land Registry on the evening of the 3rd of each month. If a change of owners will be in the Land Registry from the 3rd to the 10th of the month, you can contact us and request that the new owner will receive the next bill.
