When an outage occurs or there is time for maintenance it is sometimes necessary to temporarily shut down the electricity and hot or cold water in your neighbourhood while repairs are made. At that time, it is good to tend to taps or electronic devices, depending on what is being fixed.
We do our best to inform residents about expected or ongoing shut-downs e.g. by posting it here on our website, update our Facebook page, send text messages and send door-to-door notifications.
Here you can find news on outages and constructions.
If electricity needs to be shut down, bear in mind:
-
Do not have sensitive electronic devices in use when the power is taken off.
-
It is possible that timed electronics will need to be reset when the power is put back on.
If the hot water needs to be shut off, bear in mind:
-
Due to burn risks we encourage you to show caution and not to turn faucets on. If they are left turned on it can cause accidents and/or damage when the hot water is turned back on. Please mention this risk to your children.
-
While the shut-down remains, avoid turning on devices that use hot water.
-
Avoid having windows and doors open longer than necessary.
If the cold water needs to be shut off, bear in mind:
-
Due to burn risks we encourage you to show caution and not turn faucets on because the water can become boiling hot in a short amount of time. Please mention this risk to your children.
-
Do not leave cold-water faucets turned on since it can cause damage when the water is turned on again. While the shut-down remains avoid using washing machines or other devices that use cold water.
In a power outage it is important to check whether the cause is indoors or with Veitur. If neighbouring houses are also in blackout, the outage is most likely failure in our distribution system so there is nothing else to do but wait and hope that power is restored as soon as possible. You can contact us by phone 516 6000 if you are in doubt and also check whether there is a notification on our website stating an outage. Here you can see further tips that are good to keep in mind when there is no electricity, hot and cold water.
If the power is on in neighbouring houses it is best to check if the auto transformer switch has struck out. If it did, the cause is sometimes due to electronics that were recently plugged in. Try to set the switch again. If that doesn’t work or it strikes out again, the device should be unplugged and then try again. Then try to turn off all electricity devices and repeat. If that doesn’t work, an electrician should look at the conduits. It is also good to examine whether a fuse has blown, due to an overload. But above all proceed with caution, do nothing regarding electricity that is outside your capacity.
If there is no hot water it is possible that a resident or worker has shut it off due to construction or repairs in the building. It may also be that we are working in your neighbourhood and you should have been notified, unless sudden outage is the case. Information regarding outages should appear on our site soon, but you can also contact us by phone 516 6000. Here you can see further tips that are good to keep in mind when there is no electricity, hot and cold water.
Outage can be in the building, radiator valves or other control system and a plumber needs to be notified. Outages indoors are almost always the purview of a plumber.
If it is clear that the pressure has fallen to the input it needs to be reported to us by phone 516 6000.
Outages that occur outside must immediately be reported to us by phone 516 6000, but that is our outage-notification phone which is open around the clock. If you notice any exposed electrical wiring, broken or damaged street lights, we want to hear from you as soon as possible. Also if you notice a leakage of hot or cold water and flooding up from the drains for example.
Outages indoors are usually the purview of a skilled craftsman, but if you are in any doubt, please call us and we'll help you as best we can since we are concerned about your safety.
Verjumst vatnstjóni (Prevent water damage) is a brochure issued by a co-operation group on the prevention of water damage. Only in Icelandic at the moment.
When we need to close the water or electricity we send residents in the affected areas text messages to notify of potential closures or outages in distribution systems. We will probably never reach all residents, but if you want to receive a text messages and emails just log in to My account and keep your phone number and email address up to date. You are also welcome send us this information using the "Contact us" form.
